saturday betty street

I have to re-submit due to my file requiring repairs. It's funny because there weren't any errors when I saved it on Thursday. Then today there were 96. I have just done another and there are none again. Here are the three stages of checks I have completed:

Correct units setup and dimensions

STL check result - no error

Solidworks diagnostics result - no faulty faces or gaps remain in the geometry

So all good with version two. This is the file I am now going to submit. Now I just have to get into town...

thursday vivian street - hand-in

Have played with lots of versions of my model but finally ended up with this one...

Project Three - hand-in

There's a smaller version (child) inside the form. I am playing with ideas about the render but this the first basic idea I've had:

wednesday betty street

I have been working today on making an interesting lid for my container...

Starting with the holey  version of the fish scale tiles

I add the bend modifier

then the stretch modifier

then the push modifier

and finally the turbosmooth
You can see through the lid into the interior where the smaller inner container will be visible...

Small hole can be seen here
I have been using the STL check modifier throughout this process and so far no errors

After today's tutorial I have been working on developing forms around the word parent and protect.

I have been looking at images of the Supreme Court interior design (in Wellington) which is inspired by the kauri cone.

This seems to also capture the essence of the fish scale/overlapping tiles ideas I have been working on.

I like the idea of the pattern being visible (and important) on the interior as well.

I am really working on evolving the parent narrative and was reminded of Babushka dolls that reveal smaller dolls when they are opened in their middle. This seems like a logical way to interpret the meaning I want to convey and actually also further develops the idea of protecting the child within. I think therefore my object will shelter a smaller version of itself within.

I was also reminded (during Sunny's lecture) of wordl.net and have created a word cloud which is possible text based image to apply to my object or use in my final render:

wordl.net
Finally I kept going with the forms and arrived at some interesting objects using the tiles I made in the tutorial today:

Once again I used array to form a wall of tiles

like this
Once I had made the cylinder shape I applied turbosmooth and had something I really liked. So I started applying a wood grain material to test the rendering.

Used the 'cylindrical' option in the UVW Map modifier

Then the 'face' option

...the 'XYZ to UVW'

...and finally the 'Box' option which is my 'go to' option every time
So now I was happy with the look of the render I went back to modifying the cylinder and trying to articulate my parent narrative by creating an opening at the top of the form through which we'll be able to see the smaller 'child' form.

I applied the Taper modifier (inversely) to the shape

...and I pulled the top tiles back so that we can see the smaller shape inside

The only thing that concerns me about this version is how the tiles seem to barely touch (because of the turbosmoothing stage) so I feel sure it will break when I am cleaning it.

You can see what I mean better with a coloured background

tuesday vivian street

I have been working on tile options. I sketched them first...

As per my previous entry here, I have used this sketch as the basis for my tile designs.

And then, going back to my fish scale shape, created these in 3ds Max using the boolean subtraction command:

I am going to use these to create a simple pattern that will add interest to my final form.

Now have two families of treasure holders. Here's the second group. I like the second from the right. I've had problems applying the UV map to the base part of each form... The option has disappeared in the modifiers list. I'm thinking it hast got something to do with groups. Will find out today hopefully.

Also, here are the three words that encapsulate my object:

Parent (noun)

Protect (verb)

Precious (adjective)
